Tradition! Tradition!

The highlight of the holiday season, for me, was making Fattyman Bakels! It is more than just a cookie. It is a symbol of pride, homemaking skills of a grandmother and a grandmother before her, and a rich Scandinavian heritage that was so lovingly passed on to those who remain.

I couldn't help feeling homesick for the farm and for Grammy and Gramps as I followed the recipe. Wondering how long to beat the eggs, wishing that I could consult Gramps' advice, and craving the story of its origination and how it became a tradition.

They turned out beautifully and they tasted like lemon, home, and love of generations past.
